The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) had earlier revealed that the future of Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant will be determined at the end of the year as his two-year contract comes to an end this December.
Grant, who took over the national team in 2022, has made significant strides, leading Zambia to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications. Speaking last month, Grant emphasized his commitment to the team’s progress.
“I am happy to be here; I am happy to do my job. If I was unhappy, I would leave. But I have targets that I want to achieve by building a good team, and if I don’t think I’ll meet them, [I can leave],” he said.
FAZ to Review Performance
FAZ General Secretary Rueben Kamanga confirmed that Grant’s contract was performance-based and would be reviewed following Zambia’s recent successful AFCON qualifiers. Chipolopolo topped Group G, finishing ahead of defending champions Ivory Coast, and secured a spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
“His contract expires at the end of this year. It was a two-year contract. As we approach the end of the year, we will sit down and evaluate the key targets we set for the coach,” Kamanga stated.
Divided Opinions
Since his appointment, Grant has faced mixed reactions from fans. However, his leadership ended Zambia’s eight-year AFCON qualification drought and secured another appearance at Africa’s premier football event. His performance has sparked debate over whether he should continue as Chipolopolo’s head coach.
What’s Next for Chipolopolo?
With Zambia preparing for crucial AFCON matches and aiming for sustained success, the decision on Grant’s future will be pivotal. His ability to navigate tough competition and build a competitive team has been evident, but the ultimate decision lies with FAZ.
