CAF Sanctions FAZ Over Fans’ Misconduct During Sierra Leone Match
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly imposed sanctions on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) following incidents of pitch invasion and security breaches during the October 9, 2024, Group G Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Zambia's Chipolopolo and Sierra Leone's Leone Stars.

According to FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, CAF fined Zambia $20,000 for the incidents. He explained that half of the fine, $10,000, is suspended, provided FAZ avoids similar infractions over the next 12 months. Kamanga stated that if another breach occurs within this period, the suspended amount would automatically be reinstated alongside any additional sanctions CAF may impose.
Kamanga also revealed that CAF expects the unsuspended portion of the fine to be paid within 60 days. He quoted correspondence from CAF’s Disciplinary Board, emphasizing the importance of maintaining adequate security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In light of the sanctions, Kamanga urged fans to uphold better behavior in the upcoming year. He warned that repeated misconduct, such as throwing objects or invading the pitch, could lead to harsher penalties, including potential bans on hosting home matches. “We appeal to fans to behave better in 2025 and make the stadium a safer environment for families,” he said.
The FAZ Communications Manager, Sydney Mungala, reiterated the importance of creating a secure and family-friendly atmosphere at matches to avoid future penalties from CAF or FIFA.
This development highlights the significant role of fan behavior in upholding the integrity and security of football events at both domestic and international levels.
