Zambia’s women’s national football team, the Copper Queens, reportedly received their winning bonuses ahead of their highly anticipated 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final clash against Nigeria.
According to sports journalist Patson Kawewe, the payments cover the team’s group stage performances, specifically the draw against Morocco and the crucial win over Senegal. Kawewe further indicated that the bonus for the Copper Queens’ 1-0 victory over DR Congo would be processed in the coming days.
He also reported that part of the players’ camping allowances was paid prior to the match against Morocco — a move that has been viewed as a timely morale boost within the camp.
Although the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has not released an official statement, Kawewe stated that the disbursement of the funds was made possible through collaboration between FAZ and the Zambian government.
The development comes as the Copper Queens prepare for a tough test against Nigeria, the nine-time WAFCON champions, in a quarter-final showdown that could see Zambia advance to the semi-finals once again, after reaching the same stage in the previous edition.
