In October 2021, then 23-year-old Zambian midfielder Enock Mwepu etched his name into Premier League history with a stunning goal at Anfield during Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Now remembered as one of his career highlights, the goal marked Mwepu’s rise as a talented footballer on the global stage. However, just a few years later, the midfielder’s promising journey was cut short due to a heartbreaking diagnosis.

A Memorable Moment at Anfield

Mwepu’s first Premier League goal came during a challenging match against Liverpool. The Reds had surged to a 2-0 lead with goals from Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane. However, Mwepu’s audacious long-range strike in the 41st minute brought Brighton back into the game, and Leandro Trossard’s equalizer secured a hard-fought point.

Reflecting on the moment, Mwepu described it as a “dream come true,” sharing on social media, “I’m just a boy from Zambia who had a dream of playing and scoring at Anfield, and today the dream has been fulfilled. Glad to get my first Premier League goal and what a performance from the team.”

The Heartbreaking End of a Promising Career

Despite such career-defining moments, Mwepu’s playing days came to an abrupt end in 2022. At just 24 years old, he was diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition after falling ill during a flight to Mali while on international duty with Zambia. The condition, which can worsen over time, posed a high risk of a potentially fatal cardiac event, forcing Mwepu to retire from professional football.

Brighton & Hove Albion released a statement confirming the diagnosis: “The condition, which can worsen over time, would put Enock at an extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event, if he were to continue playing competitive football.”

Support from the Football Community

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom expressed his sadness, stating, “We are all absolutely devastated for Enock. He and his family have had a traumatic few weeks, and while we are just thankful he has come through that period, he has seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age. As a club, we will give him all the love, help, and support we possibly can.”

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi added, “I am so sorry for Enock. Before I arrived, I looked at all the squad, and he was a player I was so excited and looking forward to working with. We will do everything we can to help him.”

Mwepu’s Emotional Farewell

In an emotional social media post, Mwepu shared his journey: “A boy from a small Zambian township called Chambishi has some news to share. He stood strong to follow his dream of playing football at the highest level, and by the grace of God, he lived his dream by reaching the Premier League. Some dreams, however, come to an end, so it is with sadness that I announce the need to hang up my boots because of the medical advice I have received.”

Legacy of ‘The Computer’

Nicknamed “The Computer” for his exceptional positional sense and football intelligence, Mwepu joined Brighton in 2021 from RB Salzburg. He made 27 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring three goals, including his unforgettable strike at Anfield.

Though his career was tragically short, Mwepu’s resilience and achievements will continue to inspire aspiring footballers, particularly in Zambia, where his journey began. His story is a testament to perseverance and the power of chasing one’s dreams.
