Zambian football fans are in for an exciting edition of the Absa Cup 2025, as the tournament receives a major financial boost, with the champions set to take home K1,000,000, up from K800,000 in 2024. The runners-up will also enjoy an increase, now receiving K400,000, compared to last year’s K350,000.
This year’s Absa Cup will feature 21 teams, marking the second time in the tournament’s history that provincial teams will have a shot at the coveted trophy. The competition will consist of 10 provincial teams, seven MTN Super League teams, and four ZPL National League teams, making it a truly inclusive and competitive event.
Increased Sponsorship & New Incentives
Speaking at the official launch and draw held at Absa House, Absa Bank Zambia PLC Managing Director Mizinga Melu announced that the tournament sponsorship has grown from K5.5 million in 2024 to K6.5 million this year.
“This increase in prize money is a testament to our commitment to uplifting Zambian football and ensuring that clubs have the resources to grow. Furthermore, we are excited to introduce additional incentives to recognize individual brilliance on the field,” said Melu.
She also encouraged teams to play with passion and integrity while urging fans to continue supporting the competition to make Absa Cup 2025 the best edition yet.
FAZ Applauds Absa’s Commitment to Football
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Andrew Kamanga praised Absa Bank for incorporating FAZ’s decentralization initiative by allowing provincial champions to compete in the tournament.
“We have no doubt that this year’s tournament will be even bigger and better. The presence of provincial teams will generate additional interest from fans across the country. We are happy to witness the manifestation of decentralization through tournaments like this, which is part of what we envisaged when we undertook this journey in 2021,” Kamanga stated.
He also called on other corporate entities to follow Absa’s example by investing in Zambian football, emphasizing that national teams and leagues are in need of sponsorship.
