FAZ Rolls Out GPS Technology: A New Era for Zambian Football

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has taken a groundbreaking step in revolutionizing the Zambian football landscape with the rollout of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for all Super League teams, both men’s and women’s. This landmark initiative aims to elevate the standards of football performance, player monitoring, and overall professionalism in the country.
Transforming Football with Innovation
The FAZ President, Andrew Kamanga, emphasized the transformative nature of this development, describing it as a “technological milestone.” Speaking at the launch, Kamanga highlighted how GPS technology would empower teams, coaches, and players to compete both locally and internationally.

“This initiative is not just about introducing cutting-edge technology; it is about transforming the way we approach football development in our country. With GPS technology, our teams now have the tools to monitor and analyze player performance with precision,” Kamanga said.
What the GPS Project Includes
FAZ has procured 36 sets of GPS equipment for:
18 MTN Super League teams
18 Eden University Women’s Super League teams
8 national teams for men and women
The GPS packages include:
900 GPS units
900 vests
900 heart rate monitors
36 charging docks

Kamanga noted that this project aligns with FAZ’s broader vision of professionalizing Zambian football, which includes the ongoing steps to integrate VAR technology.

FAZ Partners with Catapult Sports
FAZ has partnered with the globally renowned performance analytics company, Catapult Sports, to train beneficiaries on how to maximize the benefits of the GPS equipment. This ensures that the technology will be effectively utilized across all levels of football.
A Collaborative Effort
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Arts, Kangwa Chileshe, commended FAZ for its forward-thinking approach, noting the alignment with ongoing projects like stadium rehabilitation and the soon-to-be-launched technical center in Chongwe.
“The integration of GPS trackers will undoubtedly serve as a game changer for our clubs,” added Zambia Premier League Chairperson Kephas Katongo.
Next Steps
Training sessions for teams in the northern regions will commence shortly, followed by the official handover of GPS units. FAZ remains committed to ensuring that the league-level innovations are seamlessly aligned with national team standards.
