Zambia’s youthful Chipolopolo side will face arch-rivals Zimbabwe tomorrow in the final of the Mukuru Four Nations Tournament, with kickoff scheduled for 18:00 hours at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium.
Zambia secured their place in the final after edging Malawi 9–8 in a dramatic penalty shootout, while Zimbabwe progressed with a convincing victory over hosts Botswana.
Chipolopolo assistant coach Oswald Mutapa will once again use the match as an opportunity to assess a youthful squad assembled with long-term ambitions in mind, including qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup and future Olympic Games.
Mutapa has utilised the tournament to give exposure to emerging talent and is expected to rely on attacking options such as Eliya Mandanji, Derrick Bulaya and captain Abraham Siankombo. Nchanga Rangers forward Elliot Kampukesa is also expected to feature.
In goal, Patrick Chooma is likely to retain his place between the posts, while the defensive line could include Headson Paina, Jonathan Kalimina, Jackson Phiri and Kafunti Saisada.
The midfield setup may again feature Dominic Kanda, Humphrey Bwembya, Francis Banda, Derrick Bulaya and Siankombo.
Other players available for selection include goalkeeper Luka Mainza, along with Christo Chitambala, Kelvin Chipelu, Ronald Chileshe, Yoram Chanda, Joseph Mulenga, William Kamwanga and Luka Mutoshi.
Also in contention are Patson Kwataine, Golden Mashata, Elliot Kampukesa, Rickson Ng’ambi, Abel Salim Nyirongo and Ian Sindayi.
However, Zimbabwe are expected to provide a stern test in what is traditionally known as the Battle of the Zambezi.
Highlanders striker Mongameli Tshuma impressed in Zimbabwe’s previous match, scoring once and providing an assist, while captain Marvelous Nakamba controlled proceedings in midfield.
The Warriors will, however, be without US-based defender Teenage Hadebe, who has been suspended for breaching camp rules.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Mutapa remained confident despite his side missing several chances in the semi-final.
“We played a very tough game against an experienced side, but the boys showed courage and maintained structure. We created chances and could have won the game earlier. Going into this match, the focus is to be more clinical and take our chances,” said Mutapa.
“If we are able to create chances, then it means we can score at any given time. The message to the players is to stay confident and take the opportunities.”
Assistant captain Golden Mashata said the tournament has been valuable for player development across the region, adding that the team is ready for the challenge ahead.
Zimbabwe coach Mario Marinica has meanwhile warned against underestimating Zambia, noting that Chipolopolo play a structured and system-based game despite their youthful lineup.
With regional pride, bragging rights and silverware at stake, both sides head into the final aiming to lift the Mukuru Four Nations Trophy in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
