The Zambian government has reportedly indicated that its main focus is on rebuilding a strong Senior Men’s National Football Team rather than exerting pressure on winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu, the Chipolopolo squad is said to be going through a period of instability, and the emphasis should therefore be on developing a team that can bring honors in the future. He is reported to have explained that this long-term strategy is necessary due to the steady decline in the team’s performance over the years.

Speaking to ZNBC Sport News, Mr. Nkandu was quoted as saying that the incoming coach and technical bench are expected to focus on building a competitive side for the December 2025 AFCON, without being weighed down by immediate expectations for silverware.

He reportedly added that the government, as a key stakeholder representing the Zambian people, desires to have a coach who will serve national interests and help restore the Chipolopolo’s winning spirit.

Mr. Nkandu is also said to have affirmed that his ministry would give full support to whoever is appointed as head coach—whether local or expatriate—and reiterated the government’s commitment to the long-term rebuilding of the national team.
