The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed veteran coach George Lwandamina as interim head coach of the Zambia senior men’s national team, Chipolopolo.
FAZ Acting Deputy General Secretary Iva Lengwe announced the changes, stating that the move is aimed at improving efficiency and strengthening the team’s performance.
Lwandamina will take charge of the national team on an interim basis and will be assisted by Power Dynamos head coach Oswald Mutapa Jr.
The decision follows FAZ’s move to relieve Wedson Sichone of his duties in the aftermath of the Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
This marks a return to the Chipolopolo technical bench for Lwandamina, who previously served as Zambia’s head coach between 2015 and 2016 before being succeeded by Wedson Nyirenda. He is currently the head coach of Nchanga Rangers.
FAZ has also confirmed that Perry Mutapa has been relieved of his duties as assistant coach after serving on the national team’s technical bench during the AFCON tournament.
Lengwe clarified that the recent changes only affect the positions of head coach and first assistant, with the rest of the technical bench remaining intact.
“Only the positions of head coach and first assistant have been affected by these changes. The rest of the technical bench remains unchanged and will continue carrying out their respective responsibilities,” Lengwe said.
The changes take effect immediately.
Lwandamina’s first assignment will be leading Zambia at the Four-Nation Tournament set to take place in Francistown, Botswana, from March 23 to 31, 2026.
With limited time before the competition begins, the newly constituted technical bench has been tasked with assembling a competitive squad made up of both locally based and foreign-based players for the tournament.
