The National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ), through its CEO Sombwa Musunsa, has announced that after February 28, 2025, the current Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) executive, led by President Andrew Kamanga, will no longer be recognized.

This decision follows recommendations from the Attorney General, who clarified that the tenure of the current FAZ executive will conclude on February 28, 2025. As a result, FAZ has been directed to hold its elections before this date to ensure a lawful transition.

FAZ had initially scheduled its annual general elections for March 29, 2025, in Livingstone. However, this plan directly contradicts the FAZ constitution, specifically Article 33 (3) and (4), which outline the tenure of office for FAZ executives:

  • "The President shall be elected by the Annual General Meeting for a period of four years. The term of office of the President shall begin after the end of the Annual General Meeting at which he/she was elected. No person may serve as President for more than three terms of office (whether consecutive or not)."

  • "Previous terms as Vice President or member of the Executive Committee shall not be considered in determining the limits of a President. The Vice President and members of the Executive Committee shall be elected for a period of four years. Their terms of office shall begin after the end of the General Meeting at which they are elected. They may serve for no more than three terms of office (whether consecutive or not)."

Based on these constitutional provisions, the tenure of the current President, Vice President, and Executive Committee, who were elected during the Annual General Meeting held on February 27, 2021, is set to expire at the end of the four-year period on February 28, 2025. Any actions or decisions taken by the current executive beyond this date would lack constitutional legitimacy unless they are re-elected in accordance with FAZ’s constitutional guidelines.

Additionally, the NSCZ has advised FAZ to appoint a credible Electoral Committee to oversee the election process. This move is aimed at ensuring that the elections are free, fair, and transparent, thereby maintaining integrity within Zambian football governance.

As FAZ navigates this transition, stakeholders, football clubs, and fans will be keenly watching how the association handles the electoral process and the leadership transition. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of football administration in Zambia.
