SAMIAH PHIRI EXCITED ABOUT COPPER QUEENS CALL-UP

26.01.2026 | Football DNA

France-based midfielder Samiah Phiri has expressed excitement and pride after receiving her maiden call-up to the Zambia Women’s National Team, as preparations intensify for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to be held in Morocco.

Speaking to FAZ Media, Phiri described the moment as a huge honour and praised the welcoming atmosphere within the Copper Queens camp. She also highlighted the physical nature of the game, noting the clear contrast with her experiences in France and the United States.

“The difference I am finding here is how physical the game is. Everyone is very physical and passionate about the game, you can really feel it. It’s different from France and the US, but I’m already loving it and adjusting to the style,” said Phiri.

The midfielder, who is battling for a place in the attacking department, welcomed the competition within the squad, saying it has pushed her to work harder.

“Everyone in the striking positions is really good. I’m happy there’s strong competition because it pushes me to work even harder. Whether I start or not, I believe I can compete and contribute to the team,” she added.

Copper Queens head coach Nora Häuptle has welcomed Phiri into the squad as Zambia continues its build-up to the continental showpiece. Phiri remains optimistic about making a meaningful impact and helping the team achieve success on the African stage.

“I’m praying and hoping I’ll be there to represent Zambia and maybe come back home with a trophy,” she said.

With hunger, adaptability, and ambition, Samiah Phiri’s inclusion adds depth and competition to the Copper Queens as they set their sights on WAFCON glory.
