The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has expressed deep concern over the rise of hooliganism and unsportsmanlike conduct during league matches, emphasizing the need to protect the integrity of Zambian football.

In a statement issued recently, ZPL Chairman Kephas Katongo condemned disruptive incidents at several stadiums. These included missile-throwing during the Week 15 Kitwe derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana FC at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium and further disruptions during Week 17 matches at Railway Stadium in Kabwe and Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka. Such acts endangered lives, disrupted games, and tarnished the league's reputation.

ZPL's Call to Action

Chairman Katongo assured fans, teams, and other stakeholders that the ZPL would thoroughly investigate these incidents and implement decisive measures to curb such behavior. "The alarming rise in such actions is unacceptable and must be addressed immediately," he said.

Katongo issued a stern warning to all stakeholders—fans, players, coaches, and referees—to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship. He reminded everyone that football comes with three possible results: a win, a loss, or a draw, all of which must be accepted with dignity.

"With our league followed across the continent and beyond, we must protect the image of Zambian football," Katongo emphasized.

Ensuring Safety and Fair Play

The ZPL has urged stadium security personnel to enforce stricter measures to maintain order, pointing out that some fan actions border on criminality and should be treated as such. Additionally, Katongo reiterated the ban on the sale of beer in bottles at stadiums due to the safety risks they pose.

Referees were also reminded of their responsibility to officiate matches fairly, with Katongo warning that any referee found guilty of poor performance would face serious consequences. He added that modern technologies would be utilized to ensure accountability and fairness.
