The Zambian U-20 women’s football team made headlines in July 2025 after lifting the COSAFA Championship trophy in Namibia. However, behind the celebrations, reports have emerged of off-field controversy that has sparked debate among sports officials, fans, and the wider public.

According to seasoned journalist Augustine Mukoka, officials leading the Zambian delegation in Windhoek were forced to intervene on the eve of the final (July 12, 2025) after several players went missing from camp. Acting on suspicion, officials entered one of the players’ rooms at the University of Namibia, where they allegedly found some of the girls engaged in what has been described as a sex party.

Mukoka reported that officials tore the door open after their calls went unanswered. The discovery led to heated discussions within the camp, with some officials arguing that the players involved should be barred from participating in the final. Others, however, insisted that the girls should be allowed to play given the importance of the match. Ultimately, the players featured, and Zambia went on to win the regional trophy.

The journalist further expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of same-sex relationships within Zambia’s junior and senior women’s football teams. He warned that if left unaddressed, the issue could escalate into a serious challenge for sports governance and discipline in the country.

These allegations have since stirred widespread reactions, with some calling for a thorough investigation while others argue for respect of players’ privacy and the need to focus on their on-field achievements. The situation raises sensitive questions around sports discipline, cultural norms, and the safeguarding of young athletes.

For now, Zambia’s U-20 triumph remains historic, but the surrounding controversy continues to cast a shadow over the victory. Whether authorities take action—or allow the matter to fade—remains to be seen.
