Zambian assistant referee, Diana Chikotesha, etched her name in history as the first female on-pitch match official to feature in a men's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final this past weekend. Displaying flawless officiating skills, Chikotesha contributed to Ivory Coast's 2-1 victory over Nigeria in Sunday's decisive match in Abidjan.
Having honed her skills through numerous COSAFA tournaments, the 35-year-old is poised for more assignments in men's football. Her remarkable journey includes officiating at the African Nations Championship finals and the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
Adding to the COSAFA presence on the pitch, Jerson dos Santos from Angola joined as the other assistant referee, highlighting the region's excellence in developing match officials. In the VAR room, Maria Rivet from Mauritius played a crucial role.
Dahane Beida from Mauritania took the central referee position, and the team included another female official, Bouchra Karboubi from Morocco, as the fourth official.
Chikotesha's historic feat marks a significant stride in promoting gender inclusion and excellence in football officiating. This milestone is not only a personal achievement but a testament to the talent cultivated in the COSAFA region.
