The National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka has received a major boost after its playing surface was officially certified fit for use following extensive rehabilitation works.

The stadium's hybrid turf had suffered significant damage due to an army worm infestation last month, prompting urgent restoration efforts to ensure the facility meets the required standards for competitive football.

Following an inspection of the pitch, Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe expressed satisfaction with the progress made, describing the restoration as a positive step towards the full reopening of one of Zambia's premier sporting venues.

Chileshe noted that many football fans, athletes and stakeholders have eagerly awaited the return of operations at the stadium, adding that government remains committed to ensuring the facility complies with FIFA requirements.

He further revealed that substantial resources had been invested in rehabilitating the playing surface and confirmed that the installation of the remaining two roofing panels will be completed soon. According to Chileshe, administrative procedures were responsible for the delays in completing the roofing works.

Meanwhile, contractor Marius Van Niekerk emphasized the importance of protecting the newly restored turf once it becomes fully operational. He advised that the pitch should not be used for non-sporting events unless appropriate protective coverings are installed.

Van Niekerk also highlighted the need for regular maintenance to preserve the quality of the hybrid surface, explaining that specialised treatment will be required approximately every three months depending on usage levels.

With the pitch now cleared for use, National Heroes Stadium is expected to host its first match in July 2026, marking an important milestone in the facility's return to full operation and providing a significant boost for Zambian football.

The development comes as welcome news for football stakeholders, who have long viewed the stadium as a key venue for hosting local and international matches.
