FAZ Names Chris Kaunda Zambia U-17 Head Coach, Kalaba Appointed Team Ambassador

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has officially appointed veteran tactician Chris Kaunda as head coach of the Zambia Under-17 men's national team ahead of the 2026 COSAFA Under-17 Championship.

Kaunda will be assisted by Dennis Makinka and Dabwitso Nkhoma, while former Chipolopolo striker Collins Mbesuma has been named strikers' coach. Joshua Titima will oversee the goalkeepers.

According to FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya, the appointments have been made early to give the technical bench ample time to prepare for the COSAFA tournament, which doubles as the qualification pathway to the CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Chakatazya said FAZ is confident that Kaunda's experience and leadership will help guide the young squad in its quest to qualify for the continental showpiece. Qualification is particularly important as the U-17 AFCON also serves as the route to the 2027 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, following Zambia's failure to reach the 2026 tournament.

The technical bench is further strengthened by Clive Hichilensa (fitness coach), Nathan Sinkala (equipment manager), Matambo Lukhanda (team manager), and Keith Mulamba (security officer). The team's medical department will be led by Dr Emmanuel Kanswe and Isaac Sichali.

In another notable appointment, 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner Rainford Kalaba has been named Team Ambassador for the Under-17 side. The former Chipolopolo captain is expected to mentor and inspire the next generation of Zambian football talent as they pursue success on the regional and continental stage.

With a blend of experienced coaches and respected former internationals, Zambia's Under-17 team will be aiming to make a strong impression at the COSAFA Championship and secure a return to Africa's biggest youth football competition.
