Former Chipolopolo winger and international football analyst Clifford Mulenga has called on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to urgently implement wide-ranging structural changes, which he believes are critical to improving the state of football in the country.
In his remarks, Mulenga stated that his views were not intended to be controversial, but were instead grounded in his research, experience, and genuine concern for the development of Zambian football.
Call for Key Appointments
Mulenga argued that FAZ needs to prioritise the appointment of competent professionals across both technical and administrative departments. Among the most urgent changes he highlighted was the need for a new national team coach, as well as the appointment of a new FAZ Technical Director.
He further proposed that FAZ should consider appointing separate technical directors for the men’s and women’s national teams, a move he believes would help address the specific needs and growth paths of each team.
Strengthening Football Development and Administration
According to Mulenga, youth football remains the backbone of long-term success and therefore requires focused leadership. He called for the appointment of a new head of youth football development to oversee talent identification and progression.
On the administrative side, Mulenga identified the need for a head of FAZ administrative affairs, alongside dedicated heads for football competitions, marketing, procurement, and finance. He also stressed the importance of appointing a logistics manager to improve planning and coordination, particularly for national teams and competitions.
Transparency and Accountability
Mulenga emphasised that appointing individuals to these roles should not be rushed or politically driven. Instead, he said the vetting process must be transparent, merit-based, and aligned with modern football governance standards.
He noted that strong institutions, clear roles, and professional management structures are essential if Zambian football is to compete effectively on the continental and global stage.
A Call Rooted in Care for Zambian Football
Concluding his message, Mulenga said his proposals were motivated by his deep care for the game and his desire to see Zambian football thrive. He stressed the need for unity, accountability, and decisive leadership within FAZ.
As debates around football governance continue, Mulenga’s recommendations have added to growing calls for reform, placing renewed focus on how FAZ can rebuild confidence and chart a stronger future for football in Zambia.
