Copper Queens head coach Nora Häuptle has revealed that her technical bench has widened its scouting network to include players in the diaspora with Zambian roots, as part of efforts to strengthen the national women’s team.
Speaking to the FAZ Media Team, Häuptle said while diaspora players are welcome, earning a place in the Copper Queens squad is strictly based on merit. She stressed that overseas-based players must demonstrate clear quality and commitment that exceeds what is currently available locally.

Häuptle, who recently handed a call-up to France-based striker Samiah Phiri, emphasized that the door remains open to more eligible players abroad—provided they are ready to play with pride and dedication for Zambia.
“We basically say Zambia Ku Calo. All players in the diaspora with Zambian roots are welcome to our national team,” Häuptle said.
“We have extended our scouting to the US and Europe, and currently we have some players on our radar, especially in Europe.”
However, the Swiss tactician made it clear that wearing the Copper Queens jersey comes with responsibility.
“First of all, we need to check a player’s commitment to playing for Zambia. They must be willing to play for the badge and have a heart for the country,” she explained.
“Secondly, they need to be better than our local talent in a particular position.”
Beyond footballing ability, Häuptle highlighted character and team fit as non-negotiable requirements.
“Thirdly, there must be dialogue, and I need to assess whether their character fits into our team,” she said.
“When those three steps are completed—like in Samiah Phiri’s case—we invite them. Sometimes we also need to work on documentation such as passports, and then they are good to go.”
With the Copper Queens preparing for major international assignments, Häuptle’s approach signals a balanced blend of local development and global talent identification—ensuring that every player who earns a spot is fully committed to the national cause.
