Patson Daka, Leicester City striker and proud representative of Zambia, recently shared his thoughts on the transformative power of football, the pride of representing his nation, and his responsibility to inspire future generations. Speaking as part of the "By Way of Africa" series, Daka reflected on his journey and the values that guide him both on and off the pitch.
Football is more than a game in Zambia—it’s a way of life, a source of unity, and a tool for transformation. In a recent interview for the By Way of Africa series by NBC Sports, Patson Daka shared his experiences as a Leicester City striker and what football means to him and his country.
The Pride of Wearing Zambia’s Jersey
When asked about the pride he feels wearing his country’s jersey, Daka said:
"You can’t really put the feeling into words unless you experience it, because it’s a dream come true. There are a lot of people that play football, and you’re one of the few who gets to represent your nation."
Daka emphasized the honor of being part of something larger than himself—a symbol of unity and hope for Zambia.
Football: A Way of Life in Zambia
Reflecting on the cultural significance of football in Zambia, Daka described it as life-changing:
"In Zambia, the sport is almost a way of life. I think it helps a lot of people—it changes lives. A lot of people find joy and happiness in sports and the way it unites the nation. I think it’s one great way of helping people to stay away from [things like] drug abuse or any other challenges that one can face."
Football, he said, is not just a game but a powerful force that connects communities and inspires individuals.
Responsibility to Inspire
Daka recognizes the responsibility that comes with being a role model for the next generation of Zambians. He said:
"You have to be the change that you want to see. My actions give [young people] direction because they brought me to where I am today. I’m teaching a lot of people how to live, even without knowing them or saying anything."
A Journey of Unity and Resilience
Daka also reflected on Zambia’s historic victory at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, a moment that inspired him and brought the nation together.
"When Zambia won the 2012 African Cup of Nations tournament, everyone went out into the streets without thinking about anything—they were just celebrating! Knowing the unity that [football] brings to the nation, and that you are part of that equation which brings people together, it’s just an amazing feeling."
Football's Lessons for Life
Daka believes that football teaches valuable life lessons. He credited the sport for instilling discipline, respect, and a sense of community in him:
"Growing up, I was taught by my family that if you want to live with others, you have to learn to be responsible for your own actions because every action has consequences. Respect is one of the core values where I come from. You must show respect to everyone, have the courage to stand up for yourself and what’s right, and be humble enough to recognize when you’re wrong."
These values continue to guide him on and off the pitch.
Conclusion
Patson Daka’s story is a testament to the power of football to inspire, transform, and unite. His journey from Zambia to the Premier League reflects his dedication to his craft, his love for his country, and his commitment to being a role model for future generations.
Daka’s dream is not just to succeed but to use his platform to uplift others and bring joy to his nation. His story is a shining example of how football transcends boundaries and creates lasting impact.
