Zambia has officially secured a place in the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after Mozambique withdrew from the qualifiers. The matches, originally set for December 21 in Mozambique and December 28 in Zambia, were canceled following the Mozambican Football Federation’s (FMF) decision.
LanceMZ reported that the FMF Executive Board met on December 3, where President Feizal Sidat confirmed the withdrawal. Sidat cited political unrest in the cities of Maputo and Matola, stemming from contested election results on October 9. The unrest, marked by widespread protests led by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, has disrupted daily life, including sporting activities.
The FMF emphasized that the safety of players, officials, and fans could not be guaranteed, prompting the difficult decision to pull out of the competition. Sidat expressed hope that Mozambique would overcome these challenges and return stronger to continental football in the future.
Meanwhile, Zambia now turns its focus to preparations for CHAN 2025, which will be hosted across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
This automatic qualification positions Zambia as one of the teams to watch in the prestigious tournament.
The FMF plans to formally notify the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of its decision, aiming to avoid sanctions.
Zambia will now join other qualified teams for the CHAN tournament, representing a significant opportunity to showcase their strength on the continental stage.
