Zambian football has taken a giant leap forward with the signing of a historic five-year, US$5 million broadcast partnership between the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) and TopStar Communications.
At the launch ceremony, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana described the agreement as unprecedented. He highlighted TopStar’s commitment of K960,000 towards the ZPL Awards and its pledge to broadcast all nine MTN Super League matches every weekend. Kawana further noted that the use of local production teams would not only enhance quality but also create jobs and stimulate growth in Zambia’s broadcasting sector.
Echoing these sentiments, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe said the partnership would open up greater opportunities for clubs and players. On his part, FAZ President Keith Mweemba hailed the deal as a milestone in the league’s ongoing professionalisation drive, emphasising that matches would now be aired both locally and internationally across multiple platforms.
ZPL Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chimpampwe described the agreement as the dawn of “a new era for football broadcasting in Zambia,” pointing to expanded fan access and greater commercialisation opportunities for the league.
TopStar Co-Board Chairperson Jacqueline Chishimba reaffirmed the broadcaster’s commitment to local content. She announced that two dedicated channels had been allocated for live coverage of all nine weekend fixtures and encouraged businesses to leverage the affordable advertising packages that would accompany the broadcasts.
The landmark partnership also drew support from other stakeholders, including Sun Sports, ZNBC, and the Chinese Embassy, who described it as a boost to both Zambia’s sporting and media landscapes.
With this deal, Zambian football is now poised to reach more homes than ever before—bigger, better, and more accessible.
