In a historic move, Barbra Banda, the captain of the Copper Queens, has signed a four-year contract with the Orlando Pride in the United States National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The transfer fee of $740,000 is the second-largest in NWSL history, with the overall deal valued near $2.1 million, including bonuses. Banda's transfer marks a significant milestone for the league and adds to the growing prominence of Zambian players in international women's football.
After successful seasons with the Chinese Women’s Super League's Shanghai Shengli, where she scored 16 goals and recorded five assists last season, Banda expressed her excitement about joining the Orlando Pride. She emphasized the competitiveness of the NWSL and her eagerness to contribute to the team's success.
The deal includes a negotiated sell-on clause for any future transfer of Banda, highlighting the strategic aspects of the agreement. Banda's compatriot, Racheal Kundananji, recently became the world's most expensive player with her record-breaking deal worth $787,600 with NWSL side Bay FC.
The NWSL season is set to kick off on Saturday, March 16, featuring all 14 teams in action. Banda's addition to the Orlando Pride brings a new level of technical skill, physicality, and pace to the team's attack, marking a significant moment in the league's growth.
Orlando Pride Owner and Chairman Mark Wilf expressed gratitude to Shanghai Shengli FC for their collaboration in bringing Banda to Orlando, and he anticipates an exciting season ahead for fans. The NWSL is gearing up for its largest season yet, with numerous growth milestones on the horizon.
