Copper Queens midfielder Evarine Susan Katongo has shared her powerful and emotional journey from the streets of Chibolya to the international stage, in the latest episode of SuperSport Stories. The feature delves deep into the life of the 21-year-old, highlighting her perseverance, sacrifice, and eventual triumph against all odds.

In the acclaimed documentary-style series known for spotlighting Africa’s sports heroes, Katongo reflects on her humble beginnings in one of Lusaka’s most notorious neighbourhoods — a place often associated with hardship rather than hope. But for Katongo, it was the place where her passion for football was born.

“Growing up wasn’t easy. My parents never allowed me to play. They believed football was only for men. They would throw away or burn anything I used for training. But I never gave up,” Katongo reveals.

Despite the lack of support at home and the challenges in her environment, Katongo’s determination never wavered. Her talent eventually earned her a call-up to the Zambia Women’s National Team — a moment she describes as life-changing.

“That’s when my parents finally accepted it. They realized they couldn’t stop someone from doing what she loves. Wearing the Zambian jersey for the first time was a dream come true.”

Now a proud member of Green Buffaloes Women FC, Katongo is preparing for her second appearance at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The Copper Queens are in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and DR Congo.

With renewed focus and ambition, Katongo is aiming higher.

“Last time we came out third. This time, we want to do better, we want to bring the trophy home.”

She credits the team’s spirit as a vital ingredient for success.

“What makes this team special is the love and the unity. We push each other, we fight for each other. It’s not just about individual glory; it’s about team spirit.”

Today, Katongo stands tall as a beacon of hope for many young girls in Zambia, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds who dare to dream.

“Even those who never believed in me now believe in football. They believe sport can change lives. And I’m proud to be part of that change.”

Her story is not just about football. It’s about resilience, breaking barriers, and paving the way for the next generation of female athletes in Zambia and beyond.
