GAMPHANI LUNGU RELISHES CHIPOLOPOLO RETURN, READY FOR ALGERIA BATTLE

Chipolopolo attacker Gamphani Lungu says Zambia will not be intimidated by Algeria’s reputation when the two nations meet in Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Group I qualifier in Tizi Ouzou.
Lungu, who has returned to the national team after an extended absence, believes Zambia has what it takes to compete with the Desert Foxes provided the players remain united and match the hosts’ intensity.
Speaking after a training session at Tirsathone Stadium in Tizi Ouzou, the Orlando Pirates attacker said he was delighted to be back representing his country after patiently waiting for another opportunity.
Lungu said his absence from the national team had prepared him for the moment and thanked God for another opportunity to wear the Chipolopolo colours.
“It is good to be back and to play for Mother Zambia, which is always an honour,” Lungu said.
He added that he was encouraged by the number of young and new players in the squad and hoped to use his experience to help them settle into the national team.
“IT’S 11 VERSUS 11”
Despite acknowledging Algeria’s quality and status on the continent, Lungu insisted Zambia should approach the encounter without fear or unnecessary pressure.
He said Algeria’s reputation alone would not determine the outcome, stressing that modern football had become increasingly competitive.
“At the end of the day, it is 11 versus 11 on the field. Anyone can win,” he said.
Lungu believes Zambia’s chances will depend on how much fight, unity and determination the players bring to the pitch.
He said the squad had been working on fighting for one another, providing cover for teammates and putting the interests of the country first.
LUNGU EYEING A GOAL
The attacker also welcomed the competition for places in the squad, saying having players pushing one another was important for improving individual and team performances.
Asked what he hoped to contribute if given an opportunity against Algeria, Lungu made his intentions clear — he wants to help Zambia find the back of the net and secure a positive result.
“For me, a goal is what I want for the country. We can't win if we don't score,” he concluded.
Zambia will face Algeria on Friday, 25 September 2026, at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 Zambian time.
