In a landmark development for Zambian football, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has officially received 80 hectares of land from the government for the construction of a state-of-the-art FIFA-funded Technical Centre in Chongwe district. The project, valued at $10 million and funded through the FIFA Forward Programme, is set to transform football infrastructure in the country and revolutionize player development.

A Milestone for Zambian Football

During the handover ceremony, FAZ President Andrew Kamanga highlighted the significance of this historic initiative.

“This event lays the ground for a greater football development project. The Technical Centre will be a game-changer for the development of our game, housing high-standard football pitches, a Centre of Excellence, FAZ headquarters, and numerous other facilities,” Kamanga said in remarks delivered by Lusaka Province FAZ Chairperson Jordan Maliti.

Kamanga also expressed gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, and the Chongwe Town Council for their instrumental support in securing the land.

What the Centre Will Feature

The FIFA Technical Centre will offer:

  • Multiple football pitches with artificial and natural turf.

  • Accommodation and recreational facilities for players and coaches.

  • A Centre of Excellence for technical training, coaching certification, and youth development.

  • A modern FAZ headquarters with conference facilities.

  • Medical and gymnasium facilities for player wellness and fitness.

The centre will not only serve as a hub for football excellence but also address broader issues like talent development, youth empowerment, and infrastructure gaps.

Government Support and Broader Impact

Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe emphasized the socio-economic benefits of the project.

“This FIFA project in Chongwe represents a significant milestone in Zambia’s football history. The centre will not only elevate our football but also contribute to socio-economic development through job creation, community entrepreneurship, and tourism promotion,” Chileshe said.

He further noted the project’s potential to boost grassroots football and women’s football while tackling youth unemployment and substance abuse.

Building on Success

The project follows a series of achievements in Zambian football, including upgrades to provincial stadia such as David Kaunda, Solwezi, Kaole, and Kasama stadia, two of which have already been handed over. FAZ aims to decentralize football activities with at least one stadium in every province.

Sustainability and Collaboration

The initiative will integrate green building practices and community engagement while generating revenue through tournaments and training camps. Kamanga and Chileshe both underscored the importance of collaboration in achieving this milestone.

“This project is a remarkable testament to what can be achieved through collaboration. The FIFA Technical Centre in Chongwe will serve as a beacon of excellence, nurturing future generations of Zambian footballers while contributing to the nation’s socio-economic development,” Chileshe concluded.

A Bright Future

With the government, FAZ, and FIFA working together, Zambia is poised to cement its place as a powerhouse in African football, fostering talent and empowering communities across the nation.
