The Government of Zambia, through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ), has reportedly suspended financial support to the senior men’s national football team following a string of poor performances in recent international matches.
In a statement issued on 13 October 2025, NSCZ Director and Chief Executive Officer Sombwa Knox Musunsa is said to have announced that the government had decided to withdraw funding to the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) for the Chipolopolo until a clear roadmap on improving the team’s performance is provided.
Musunsa reportedly expressed government’s deep concern over the team’s recent results, saying the performances had failed to justify the continued use of public funds. He is believed to have highlighted that despite financial constraints, government had continued to provide significant support to the national team, covering expenses such as accommodation, air tickets, bonuses, and part of the coach’s salary.

According to the statement, the Ministry has since engaged FAZ to submit a detailed explanation on several key issues, including what measures are being taken to address the team’s decline, how the performance of the head coach is being monitored, and why government funding should not be suspended given the lack of positive results.
Musunsa is said to have emphasized that transparency and accountability in the use of public resources are essential, adding that while football remains a key pillar of Zambia’s national identity, government must ensure that its investment produces meaningful results and sustainable progress.
He further revealed that, under the guidance of the Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Honourable Elvis C. Nkandu, the Ministry had suspended financial support specifically for the senior men’s national team until FAZ presents a comprehensive plan for restoring the country’s football fortunes.
Government has, however, pledged to settle outstanding arrears owed to both the men’s and women’s national team coaches, as well as pending allowances, bonuses, and other commitments incurred up to date.

FAZ has reportedly been given until 20th October 2025 to respond to the Ministry’s concerns, after which a decision will be made on the way forward.
The NSCZ has also cautioned other sports associations to take note of the situation and ensure that they uphold the highest standards of athlete and team performance. Musunsa is reported to have warned that the Council would not hesitate to suspend funding for associations whose teams continue to underperform despite receiving government support.
He added that NSCZ plans to introduce a National Association Performance Criteria, a framework that will determine how funding is allocated to affiliated associations. The new criteria will focus on key success factors such as hiring qualified coaches, implementing credible athlete development programs, and ensuring accountability in team selection and management.
The government’s move marks a significant turning point in its relationship with the Football Association of Zambia, as it demands a stronger justification for continued public investment in the national football team.
