The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has ushered in new leadership following the election of Keith Mweemba as president during a reconvened elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Kabwe on Saturday.
Mweemba, a prominent Lusaka-based lawyer, garnered 45 votes to secure a four-year mandate that will run from 2025 to 2029. He takes over from Andrew Kamanga, who served as FAZ president from 2016 to 2025.
The tightly contested election saw Kamanga manage 20 votes, while former FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala received 17. Francis Hafwiti and Emmanuel Munaile failed to register any votes in the final tally.
The elections were the sole item on the day’s agenda, as unanimously agreed upon by the FAZ Congress. The voting process was conducted under the watchful eye of a delegation from FIFA, CAF, and COSAFA, led by FIFA’s Senior Manager for Member Associations Governance, Ahmed Harraz.
The Vice Presidential race, however, remains undecided and will head to a runoff after none of the candidates achieved the required majority. Incumbent Justin Mumba led with 41 votes, narrowly ahead of Mutale N’gandu, who polled 40. Christopher Kasale received one vote and has been eliminated from the contest.
In other developments, Col. Priscilla Katoba was officially ratified as the FAZ Women’s National Representative after going unopposed. Her nomination was proposed by Green Buffaloes Women FC and seconded by FC MUZA.
This marks a significant shift in the Zambian football landscape, with high expectations resting on Mweemba’s leadership to steer the game forward.
