The Zambia Under-17 national team capped off a memorable group-stage campaign at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 with a spirited 1–1 draw against four-time world champions Brazil at the Aspire Zone in Doha.
The result saw Zambia finish second in Group H with seven points from three matches—level with Brazil but behind on goal difference. Brazil topped the group with a +11 goal difference, while Zambia finished with +5, ensuring both nations progressed to the Round of 16 after impressive campaigns.
From the onset, Zambia played with purpose, intensity, and confidence, matching Brazil stride for stride and showing no signs of intimidation. Their fearless approach paid off in the 26th minute when Jonathan Kalimina calmly slotted home after a slick attacking move, giving the Junior Chipolopolo a well-deserved lead.
Brazil, known for their flair and attacking prowess, struggled to break down Zambia’s well-organized defense in the first half. The young Chipolopolo pressed high, closed down spaces quickly, and displayed remarkable tactical discipline.
However, the second half saw a more determined Brazilian side. The South Americans increased their tempo and eventually found the equalizer in the 81st minute through Dell, who capitalized on a momentary lapse in Zambia’s defense to make it 1–1.
Despite late pressure from Brazil, Zambia held firm, showing maturity beyond their years. The result not only earned them a place in the knockout stages but also sent a strong message about the nation’s rising football standards.
Head coach Dennis Makinka praised his players for their determination and teamwork, describing their display as one of great character and resilience. He noted that while the team conceded due to a brief lapse in concentration, their overall performance reflected the progress they have made throughout the tournament. Makinka expressed pride in how the players maintained composure and executed their game plan against such formidable opponents.
“The boys showed great character and fought like I have never seen before,” he said. “We are improving with every game, and this result will boost our morale as we move forward. Our target has always been to go as far as we can—we’re not limiting ourselves.”
Goalkeeper Christo Chitambala, who put in a confident display, also reflected positively on the match. He admitted that while the team had hoped for a win, the draw was still a strong result. “I followed all the instructions given to me and stayed focused throughout. We wanted the win, but it wasn’t to be. Still, we’ll keep working hard and aim to bring the trophy home,” he said, urging fans to continue supporting the team.
Zambia concluded the group stage unbeaten, having previously defeated Indonesia 3–1 and Honduras 5–2, before holding Brazil to a 1–1 draw. With nine goals scored and just four conceded, the Junior Chipolopolo’s debut campaign has been nothing short of exceptional.
As they advance to the Round of 16, the Zambian youngsters carry with them belief, unity, and ambition. Their performances in Qatar have captured the imagination of fans back home and showcased the growing strength, talent, and maturity of Zambian youth football on the world stage.
The journey continues—and Zambia’s football future has never looked brighter.
